Aluminum Grating

Aluminum grating offers about one-third the weight of steel with inherent corrosion resistance — no coating required. It suits architectural facades, ceilings, marine walkways and light-to-medium duty platforms where weight, handling or appearance matters, in 6061, 6063 or 5052 alloys with swage-locked, dovetail or welded construction and mill, anodized or powder-coated finishes.

What is aluminum grating?

Aluminum grating — also called aluminum bar grating — is made from aluminum alloy bearing and cross bars, commonly 6061, 6063 or 5052, joined by swage-locking, dovetail pressure-locking or welding. Its light weight simplifies handling and reduces the cost of supporting structures.

It performs best in light-to-medium duty: walkways, platforms, facades, ceilings, ventilation screens and marine access areas. For heavy vehicle loads such as forklifts and trucks, steel heavy-duty grating is normally the practical and economical choice.

Because the alloy forms its own protective oxide film, outdoor and marine use needs no coating; anodizing or powder coating is added for appearance, color or extra surface wear resistance.

Swage-locked aluminum grating

Cross bars mechanically locked into bearing bars for a clean, flush appearance — the architectural favorite for facades, ceilings and screens.

Dovetail pressure-locked grating

Pressed dovetail joints give a flat, uniform look with good lateral stability for architectural and light industrial use.

Welded aluminum grating

Anodized architectural grating

Clear, matte or black anodizing adds surface hardness, wear resistance and color for visible architectural installations.

Alloy and finish selection

Match the alloy to the part and the fabrication route. 6061-T6 is the usual structural choice when bearing-bar strength leads the decision; 6063-T6 combines good extrudability with a consistent visible surface for architectural swage-locked or pressure-locked work. 5052 is more relevant to formed sheet and fabricated accessories where formability and marine-adjacent service matter. The ordered alloy and temper should be stated on the drawing and supported by the mill certificate.

Mill finish is suitable when the natural aluminum appearance is acceptable. Anodizing is selected for a controlled architectural surface and added wear resistance, but the final shade can vary with alloy, temper, surface preparation and production batch. Approve the finish sample, film requirement and viewing standard before the full run; parts that must match visually should be processed as a coordinated lot where practical.

Clear and black are the most straightforward anodized options. Powder coating offers a broader color choice, with the coating system and color reference agreed for the exposure. Neither finish changes the need to size the bearing bars for span and load; heavy vehicle duty should still be evaluated against a purpose-designed steel grating solution.
