Engineered Around Your Load & Span

Light Duty Steel Grating

Light duty grating is selected where the verified load and support span allow a smaller bearing-bar section, a more open spacing or both. The aim is not simply to choose the thinnest panel: it is to remove unnecessary steel while keeping the required strength, deflection, opening safety and handling performance.

  • For pedestrian and light maintenance access conditions
  • Section and spacing confirmed from span, load and support details
  • Wider spacing can reduce weight where opening limits allow
  • Escalate wheel and concentrated loads to heavy-duty selection

Where the light-duty boundary starts

A light-duty specification begins with the actual duty: pedestrian traffic, occasional maintenance access or another defined light-load condition. The clear support span, load type, allowable deflection and opening-size rule are checked together before a smaller section or wider pitch is proposed.

If concentrated loads, trolley wheels, forklifts or vehicles enter the brief, the decision moves out of the light-duty range and into a dedicated load review. See Heavy Duty Steel Grating for that selection route rather than carrying an assumed light-duty section into a more demanding area.

Matching material to a light-load budget

Material economy comes from matching the entire panel to its verified duty. For carbon-steel work, the practical comparison is between bearing-bar section, pitch, support span and the selected finish—not a generic “light” label. Wider spacing or a smaller section may reduce steel and handling weight, but only where the opening rule and deflection target permit it.

Material grade, surface type and finish are confirmed per project after the environment is known. Outdoor carbon-steel panels can be hot-dip galvanized after fabrication per ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 or the customer standard, with coating results reported rather than promised as a fixed thickness.

  • Provide clear span and bearing-bar direction before comparing sections
  • State uniform, point and any wheel loads separately
  • Confirm the maximum permitted opening for people, tools or small objects
  • Use the heavy-duty route when concentrated or wheel loads are present

Fabrication & QC

Fabrication & Quality Notes

  • Panel section, bearing-bar spacing and cross-bar spacing are confirmed per project.
  • Cut-outs, banding and panel numbering follow approved layout drawings.
  • Finish is applied after fabrication when hot-dip galvanizing is specified.

FAQ

Light Duty Steel Grating FAQs

What makes a steel grating light duty?
It is a project selection for a verified light-load condition, not one fixed bar size. The section and spacing depend on support span, load type, deflection limit and opening requirements.
Can light duty grating carry trolley or vehicle wheels?
Do not assume it can. Send the wheel load, contact area, traffic frequency, span and support details for a separate load review.
Which dimensions should I send for a quote?
Send panel or area dimensions, clear support span, bearing-bar direction, load information, environment, finish and quantity. Unknown specification values can be confirmed per project.
