Steel Grating Price and Cost Factors

There is no honest universal steel grating price per square metre. Area is a convenient purchasing unit, but steel weight, material grade, construction, bearing bar section and spacing drive the base cost. Cut-outs, banding, toe plates, stair nosing and other secondary fabrication add labour. Surface treatment, documentation, packing method, shipment quantity and destination affect the delivered price. A low early quotation often has missing scope rather than a real cost advantage. Compare suppliers only after each quote names the same material, bearing bar size, spacing, surface, finish, fabrication, quantity, inspection documents, packing, Incoterm and destination.
Main cost drivers
- Material grade, bearing bar depth and thickness
- Bearing bar spacing and total panel weight
- Welded, press-locked, swage-locked or special construction
- Cut-outs, banding, toe plates, nosing, hinges and handles
- Hot-dip galvanizing, passivation, anodizing or specified coating
- Quantity, packing, freight, inspection and documentation
A comparable quotation should state
- Construction, material grade and complete spacing series
- Plain or serrated surface and named finish standard
- Net weight, quantity and secondary fabrication items
- Inspection reports and certificates included
- Packing method, Incoterm and destination
