Steel Grating Standards Guide: NAAMM, ASTM, ISO and Regional Codes

By DONGFU GRATING Engineering Team · Published 2026-07-17 · Updated 2026-07-17

A steel grating order can involve several standards at the same time. NAAMM manuals describe grating types, tolerances, load communication and fabrication practice. ASTM or equivalent material standards identify the bearing-bar material, while ASTM A123, ISO 1461 or GB/T 13912 governs hot-dip galvanizing. Regional access and building rules such as BS 4592, AS 1657 or ADA requirements can control platform geometry and opening size. These documents govern different layers, so they are not interchangeable. Name the applicable standard and edition in the project specification, then require the matching evidence such as mill certificates, dimensional inspection records and coating reports.

Standards by task

Standard Main scope Order evidence
NAAMM MBG 531–535 Types, loads, welding, design and practiceSpecification and inspection records
ASTM A36 / A1011 Carbon steel materialMill test certificate
ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 Hot-dip galvanized coatingCoating thickness report
BS 4592 / AS 1657 Industrial access structuresProject-specified fabrication checks
ADA 2010 Accessible-route opening limitsConfirmed opening size and orientation

Use one standard for each layer

One project can use NAAMM for grating language, an ASTM grade for steel, ISO 1461 for coating and a national code for the supporting access structure.

Put each requirement in the purchase specification instead of asking for blanket compliance to every listed standard.

FAQ

Questions About This Topic

Which standard applies to my project?
Usually the standard named in the project specification or required by the destination building code. Send that clause with the inquiry so the production and reporting route can be confirmed.
Is ADA a steel grating product standard?
No. It is an accessibility requirement for walking surfaces. It affects the allowed opening size and orientation on accessible routes.
